Knee Pain Treatment in Burbank, Century City and Los Angeles CA
What Causes Knee Pain?
Knee pain can be caused by a variety of different factors both acute and chronic in nature. Meniscus tears, ligament injury, tendonitis, bursitis, patella syndromes, IT band syndrome, chondromalacia, cartilage damage, avascular necrosis, fractures and arthritis are some of the most common causes of knee pain.
There are three major categories of arthritis:
- Osteoarthritis – Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis in the knee and usually occurs in people 50 years or older but sometimes it can occur in younger people as well. It is a degenerative ‘wear and tear’ type of condition where the cartilage in the knee gradually wears away causing bone rubbing on bone creating an inflammatory and painful signal within the knee. The pain associated with osteoarthritis typically worsens with time as the body is unable to regenerate cartilage that has worn away.
- Rheumatoid Arthritis: Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic auto-immune disease where the body attacks multiple joints throughout the body, including the knee joint. The immune system can attack the knee cartilage and soft tissue and lead to degenerative changes and inflammation which may lead to significant knee pain. If conservative treatments fail to alleviate the pain, patients may become candidates for knee replacement surgery.
- Post-Traumatic Arthritis: Post-traumatic arthritis occurs in patients whom have had some prior fracture or injury to their knee. Patients with intra-articular fractures of the knee are at high risk of developing arthritis in the future. Additionally, patients who have torn their ligaments or meniscus are at increased risk of developing post-traumatic arthritis.
Symptoms of Arthritis:
- The joint may become stiff and swollen, making it difficult to bend and straighten the knee.
- Pain and swelling may be worse in the morning, or after sitting or resting.
- Vigorous activity may cause pain to flare up.
- Loose fragments of cartilage and other tissue can interfere with the smooth motion of joints. The knee may “lock” or “stick” during movement. It may click or snap while walking.
- Pain may cause a feeling of weakness or buckling in the knee.
- Many people with arthritis note increased joint pain with rainy weather.
